The MoMu collection consists of clothes, accessories and textiles, but also includes more unexpected pieces: tools and equipment for textile production, patterns, invitations to fashion shows and more. The museum mainly collects works by Belgian designers and former students of the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. At the same time, it also showcases works by big players from the contemporary international fashion world. The collection is mainly stored in a new external depot at the Port of Antwerp. Only the library archive and the more delicate plastic collections are stored and examined on site at MoMu.

Every year the collection grows through purchases and loans, but also through numerous donations. Meanwhile, it has become the largest and most important collection of contemporary Belgian fashion, featuring more than 35,000 pieces. The museum is also in great demand for loans on an international level.

MoMu also boasts a historical collection of Western European costumes and textiles. It builds on the collection of the former Vrieselhof Costume and Textile Museum in Oelegem. In 2011 an important collection was added: more than two thousand pieces from the 18th and 19th century, and the first half of the 20th century, from the private collection of Mrs Jacoba de Jonge.
