Laser cutting involves burning or melting away material with a pointed beam of light. The machine follows a pattern based on a digital design - in this case, it looks like lace.

This Glitch dress was created by fashion designer Iris van Herpen and architect Philip Beesley in 2017. It is constructed from diagonal latticework made of Mylar, a strong and flexible plastic that is also used for packaging. The designers experimented with various samples to perfect the wavy movements of the transparent material. Finally, the dress was cut from a single piece of material using a laser cutter with a large cutting bed, which is the surface on which the fabric is cut. The extremely fine thread structure was created thanks to precise and controlled laser cutting using a powerful, high-speed machine with accurate spacing.
