Surrealism is a way of thinking and working that explores the boundaries between reality and imagination. It emerged in the 1920s, it manifested itself in all creative disciplines and it developed into one of the most influential artistic revolutions of the 20th century.
Surrealism also continues to inspire fashion designers. These models are a nod to the history of Belgian surrealism, but above all they invite us to look very closely, again and again. They explore the unexpected, the strange, the humorous. Some designers work with trompe-l'oeil photo prints that blur the boundaries between what is real and what is printed: fashion and photography enter into a symbiosis here. Other designers explore the boundaries between body and clothing, confusing the viewer. Some achieve a surrealist effect by adding a touch of realism. Instead of fabric, they use objets trouvés or ready-mades such as feathers, human hair, kitchen towels or paper.
