Students of the Fashion Department designed original outfits to match specific balls, under the guidance of the style teachers and Katarina Van Den Bossche. All the BA students could design proposals and 10 looks were selected from the sketches to be implemented by Rosalinde Heerkens and Aurélie Callewaert of the Antwerp pattern studio Trois-Quarts. Walter Van Beirendonck, Head of the Fashion Department, came up with the idea and concept for this fashion landmark in the city at the request of MoMu.

The look for this Fashion Ball was designed by Matthew Schell, South African, 1 BA 2021, Antwerp Fashion Department, so we asked him a few questions:

Why do you study in Antwerp?

I came to study in Antwerp because of it's immense fashion history and radical fashion education offered at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp.

Why did you participate in the Fashion Balls project?

The project under MoMu allowed us the experience of collaboration among various talents, teachings and sectors of fashion. We were also given complete creative freedom which inspired all of us to show different elements of our personal style.

What did you design and what is your inspiration behind it?

I did a study on shape and form inspired by various ceremonial garments for women through the ages. I chose to use all black, as for me it's a powerful color and along with the volume really reflected the grandiose aspect I wanted to portray.
