Students of the Fashion Department designed original outfits to match specific balls, under the guidance of the style teachers and Katarina Van Den Bossche. All the BA students could design proposals and 10 looks were selected from the sketches to be implemented by Rosalinde Heerkens and Aurélie Callewaert of the Antwerp pattern studio Trois-Quarts. Walter Van Beirendonck, Head of the Fashion Department, came up with the idea and concept for this fashion landmark in the city at the request of MoMu.

The look for this Fashion Ball was designed by Alise Anna Dzirniece, Latvian, 3 BA 2021, Antwerp Fashion Department, so we asked her a few questions:

Why do you study in Antwerp?

Alise Anna: I have known that I want to be a part of the Fashion world since I even remember myself. Even during middle school I started to explore what my possibilities were for my next educational steps, to what I want to strive for. In my first year of Secondary school, my mom an I went for a trip to Paris, that's where I saw the ''ARRRGH!''exhibition in La Gaite Lyrique and I came across the experimental works of young designers who had studied in Antwerp. I still remember the shock that I felt- wow! Looks like so much fun! Eyes wide open, trying to absorb everything. This exhibition completely opened my world and there was no question about where I wanted to go after finishing school.

Why did you participate in the Fashion Balls project?

Alise Anna: When I came to the Fashion department open days back in 2016, it was the first time I also saw an exhibition in Momu. The history it carries and the works that it has shown are really overwhelming. After hearing that we, the students, could be a part of the opening of the museum after the reconstruction, were given the chance to be a part of it - I felt a huge honour.

What did you design and what is your inspiration behind it?

Alise Anna: With the Fashion Balls project I continued to explore my 3BA collection inspirations that come from my childhood. I have always loved the look of pierrot- the collar, the hat that reaches to the sky, the look as if there was an inflated balloon under the clothing and it had exploded, only leaving the oversized blouse hanging on the body. For the colours I took the 1976 Soviet-Belarusian musical ''The Adventures of Buratino'' of which I have always liked it's aesthetic - from the characters and the make-up to the set design.
